Welcome back to my blog. My apology for lacking of blog post for the past month. I am spending a lot of time studying for a Pharmacology certification BCPS instead of writing blogs. I also got a new job. Juggling between new job training, current job, house moving and studying is a little overwhelming. But I don’t want to neglect my passion so today I will talk about three money saving tips that you can use right away to put $2,000 back into your bank account.

1) Brew your own coffee

Potential saving: $1,100 / year

Millennials are spending more money on coffee than retirement plans. Isn’t that mind blowing? Here on my blog you already know I don’t promote spending but rather putting money away or investing. Take advantage of your work place if they provide free coffee just like my hospital does.

To get a easy start, you can easily get a coffee maker for like $21. They are easy to use, affordable and reliable. A 20 oz ground coffee bag makes an average of 70 cups. Instead of a $3 latte, a $1.50 cup of joe will still cost you about $540 annually. All coffee are obviously not created equal. Consider Starbucks coffee like a treat that you only can have once in a while but not every day.

2) Download store apps

Potential saving: up to $100 / year

I love shopping at Vons and yes I do have Vons grocery app. The recommendation here is to spend money but collecting points at the same times. Reward Points can be earned by shopping at Albertsons and Vons stores in the following ways:

  • Customers receive one point per $1 spent on eligible grocery purchases.
  • Customers receive two points per $1 spent on qualifying gift cards.
  • Customers receive one point for every out-of-pocket cost dollar spent on pharmacy, including co-pays.

100 Points = 1 Reward. For example 1 reward point can get me a free Hass Avocado, 1 box of signature Select Waffles or Pancakes, $1 off when purchasing banana, or $1 off on my next grocery trip. I spend an average of $125 weekly on grocery at Vons, average $6,500 a year. That’s a 65 rewards points right there.

3) Use a programmable thermostat (and unplug devices)

Potential saving: up to $412 / year

Have you ever had to turn back around after leaving your house because you are not sure if you turn off your thermostat? It happens to me many times and it could cause anxiety for some people. Having a thermo stat device that can connect to your phone can help you control your home temperature no matter where you are. Amazon has some great sale on these devices where it is easy to install (only 30 mins), save about 25% on HVAC energy, compatible with your smart home devices (Alexa, Google Assistant), and even give you a rebate.
