Is blogging profitable?

How does a blogger make money?

How do I monetize my blog?

When I first started back in 2017, I knew nothing else besides what I was trained in school to become a pharmacist. It was a struggle but also very FUN because I am the type who likes to LEARN and FIGURE OUT things on my own.

There are tons of bloggers and courses out there to teach you how to blog.

THE PLAN: HOW TO USE my BLOG most effectively.

Right now, you are currently on the very first page: Blogging for Beginners. I create this step-by-step guide to show you how to set up your blog correctly. Trust me, all the technical steps can be very cumbersome for a true beginner. If you are BRAND NEW, please follow this guide to get started.

At the end of this page, there will be instructions for WHERE TO GO NEXT. If you already have a blog and want to learn more about how to fine-tune your blog post, my recommendation on Plugin, how to create a better graphic, and how to bring more traffic to your blog with different ways of marketing, this NEXT STEP is for you.

LET’S GET STARTED

Step 1: Think about “Why do I want to start Blogging?”

DON’T FOCUS ON HAVING A GREAT BLOG. FOCUS ON PRODUCING A BLOG THAT’S GREAT FOR YOUR READERS.

SAID BRIAN CLARK

I think blogging is one of the best methods to get your creative ideas out there to the world. This is the best time for you to be a blogger because the start-up cost is relatively low, but the rewards are high.

Here are some of the benefits of blogging:

  1. Start a new business: Sometimes, a blog starts out as a hobby only to become a full-time business.
  2. Become a better writer: The only way to become a better writer is to write – pages and pages, day after day.
  3. Get immediate feedback: Publish a book can take months to get some reviews. With blogging, readers can comment on your page, and you can connect to them right away.
  4. Gain influence
  5. Establish yourself as an expert in your field
  6. Build a network: this one is my favorite because I want to create a community where everyone has the same mindset.
  7. Stay knowledgeable in your field: research…research…research

Step 2: Picking the niche for your blog

First, picking the right niche is important in generating profit. Not every topic lends itself to mentioning products, and not all products offer a meaningful payout for clicks or affiliate sales.  “A blog is only as interesting as the interest shown in others.”, said Lee Oden. Here are some of the base of the idea on Grant Sabatier from Millenialmoney.com

  1. Money / Insurance ($0.02 – $0.25 per pageview, $0.50 – $6 per email subscriber per month)
  2. Product Reviews ($0.01 – $0.15 per pageview, $0.25 – $5 per email subscriber per month)
  3. Travel ($0.01 – $0.10 per pageview, $0.50 – $4 per email subscriber per month)
  4. Fashion ($0.01 – $0.10 per pageview, $0.10 – $4 per email subscriber per month)
  5. Decorating ($0.01 – $0.05 per pageview, $0.10 – $4 per email subscriber per month)

Least Profitable Blogging Niches

  1. Music ($0.01 – $0.03 per pageview, $0.10 – $1 per email subscriber per month) – I worked with a guy that had a music blog that got 2 million unique visitors a month, but he barely made $2,500 a month because it’s so tough to monetize.
  2. General News/ Politics ($0.01 – $0.02 per pageview, $0.10 – $2 per email subscriber per month)
  3. Cooking / Gardening ($0.01 – $0.03 per pageview, $0.10 – $3 per email subscriber per month)
  4. Home Improvement ($0.01 – $0.03 per pageview, $0.10 – $3 per email subscriber per month)
  5. Toys/Games ($0.01 – $0.03 per pageview, $0.10 – $3 per email subscriber per month

Second, digging deeper into a category ( also called niching down) is also beneficial because it reduces your competition. Within each topic are hundreds of more specific niches. For fitness, popular topics are jump ropes, dumbbells, running, Crossfit, and endurance training. For technology, there are computers, mouse pads, tripods, gaming websites, and software affiliates.

Tiffany, content and Social Marketing Manager at Bluehost, mentioned that the narrower your topic, the less likely it is that you will compete with many authoritative websites in the space. That means fewer pages trying to rank for the same keywords and fewer pages writing about the same products as you.

Finally, niching down means making a stronger connection with your audience. The average visitor doesn’t take a product recommendation unless they feel the person recommending it to them truly understands all the ins and outs of what they care about. You must convince your audience that you know what you are talking about. The reader can easily tell who is being fake and pretentious.

When your affiliate site is niched down far enough, you can get more specific and helpful in your articles, building trust with your audience.

The more specific you can get, the better — up to a certain point. While home workouts for women are narrow enough, home workouts for women using just a jump rope are too specific. Being too specific isn’t a great idea because it can limit your audience.

There isn’t really enough content or an audience for just that, and the scope of the topic limits the kinds of products you can recommend. Be strategic about the topic you build an affiliate marketing website around.

Ultimately the easiest niche for creating content comes down to what you know best. If you want to talk about cryptocurrency but you are terrible at personal finance and number, you might want to pick something else.

“The very first step is to sit down and brainstorm what you are good at.”

Step 3: Pick a Domain name for your website

So you have an idea to create a website. A crucial step is to come up with a name that can make or break your business. Remember that you can change it later if you want to, as your business vision also changes. Here are a few guiding principles to help you pick a good name:

  1. Length: Shorter names are easier to remember and type.  It’s a good idea not to exceed 2-3 words
  2. Simplicity:  Complicated or uncommon words or names may be hard to remember and spell correctly. You want something EASY to type and pronounce.
  3. Keywords: if your business is about coffee, maybe think about including “Coffee” in the name or relevant keywords when people search for coffee
  4. Brand name: A brand is different from a name. A brand takes time to develop because your company needs to earn trust of your customers. Your domain name will reflect your brands.
  5. Website name: your domain name that the customer type to search for your website should be exactly the same as your brand or company name. For instance, if your company name is CoconutFun, but you have to pick JuiceFun for your website domain (due to the available name), it will cause confusion.
  6. Can’t be perfect: if you aren’t happy with it, you have the option to change it later.

Step 4: Pick a Blog Platform

If you are freshly new to blogging, you need to pick something that:

  1. It is EASY to use, customize and design.
  2. It has a good support system because you will encounter problems that you can’t solve it yourself.
  3. Doesn’t need a lot of or ANY coding skills.

Here are the most widely used blog platforms out there:

–> For new bloggers, I recommend WordPress because it is the foundation of blogging, and there are so many resources to help answer your questions.

Step 5: Pick a Hosting service for your web

BlueHost is one of the best and most affordable web hosting services for your blog.

Why are we talking about Hosting services? This is getting really confusing.

I know, I know, but here is why you need a Webhosting service:

Web hosting servers are the space where your website can live and be stored while being accessible on the larger web. If you want your website to be live online—in other words, if you want anyone other than you to see it—then a website hosting package is a necessary part of the equation – HostGator.

Picking a hosting service for your site is like asking what bank I should trust to put my money in: difficult to choose but not that complicated.  But if you pick it wrong, it can cause a lot of headaches trying to figure out how to use and customize it.

Just like blog platforms, there are many web hosting services out there. I have used HostGator and BlueHost since I started my blogging journey. When I first started, HostGator was recommended by a blogging site I followed. I tried to connect my WordPress page to HostGator. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out because the cPanel was difficult to navigate, especially for someone who knows nothing about web design like myself.

Yes, I am affiliated with BlueHost. I got a small commission fee when you guys sign up with them. But that isn’t the real reason why I recommend it. I put my money where my mouth is. To be honest, BLUEHOST is by far one of the best hosting services out there for these reasons:

  • COST: only $2.95/month. Just like a cup of coffee, that’s how affordable it is to use BlueHost.
  • 24/7 chat SUPPORT: This is an amazing service. I always use this free chat service because I constantly modify and improve my website. They responded very quickly and could always figure out a solution for me. You can also CALL in as well if you need to speak to a technician.
  • AUTOMATIC CONNECT to WORDPRESS: with another hosting service, such as HostGator, my WordPress site is set up separately from my hosting site, then I have to connect them somehow. But with BlueHost, I only need to log in through BlueHost and go straight to my WordPress without any additional hassle. IT IS SO EASY TO USE.

So do yourself a favor and sign up here at BLUEHOST to save yourself some headaches.

Step 6: Which BlueHost package is right for you?

BlueHost Plans options

CONGRATULATION, I am glad you selected BlueHost.

To know the differences between different packages, you can read it here straight from BlueHost.

The best hosting service package for your brand depends on your business model and your financial availability. If you have a high-traffic website, a dedicated server is probably better suited to your needs than a shared service plan. If you want to eliminate long load times virtually, consider our newest service: cloud-based hosting. The best part is you can always UPGRADE later.

I recommend the Basic plan for $2.95/month for a new blogger who has just started out. However, to reserve the $2.95/month price, you need to pay for a full 36 months for a total of $106.20

Step 7: Create a New Domain

Naming your business is like naming your own child: it’s a delicate process that might take a lot of time and thinking. Don’t rush into just picking any name because you think it fits at the moment. Four very important factors that needed to be considered when creating a new domain:

  1. Make your domain name BRANDABLE
  2. Make your domain name MEMORABLE
  3. Choose the best domain EXTENSION (.com, .org, .net,…)
  4. Do your RESEARCH

Fortunately, BlueHost allows you to complete the setup process without creating a domain name. Bluehost will check the database of all domains to ensure you aren’t trying to buy a name that already exists. Additionally, you’ll notice you have several top-level domains (TLDs) to choose from, including: “.com“, “.net“, “.org

Step 8: Install WordPress

Once you get inside the WordPress control panel, there will be directions for you to pick up a theme and start building up your site. You can just pick a random FREE theme for now and familiarize yourself with the control panel. All function tabs are on the left column and take a little time to get used to. Here is the step-by-step tutorial by Sears, K , Bluehost Field Marketing Manager. To begin, you will need to log in to your Bluehost control panel.

What you see after logging in Bluehost

1. Click on the My Sites tab from the side navigation menu to the left.

2. Click the Create Site button.

3. New windows appear for two highly recommended website builders.

4. Click the Start Building button under the WordPress option.

5. Enter the Admin Information.

Within the Admin Information, there are several fields you need to fill in:

1: Site Name – This will be the name displayed on your site. This is not the URL but simply the name used on your site.

2: Site Tagline – This should provide a brief description of your website.

3: Advanced tab – You can set up your login detail for your website in this tab, including:

  • Email Address – This will be where your login information will be sent.
  • WordPress Admin Username – The desired login name for your application
  • WordPress Admin Password – The desired password for this application.

The installer will take a couple of minutes to complete. Once you have followed these steps, your new WordPress blog is set up. All that is left to do is log in to your new blog and start customizing the look and the feel.

Step 9: Log into your new blog and pick a theme.

There are two ways to log into your wordpress blog.

The first method is by using WordPress. WordPress makes logging into your blog simple. To directly log in to your website, add “/wp-admin” to the end of your domain URL and hit enter to access the login screen.

For example, you type in the address bar “ www.WhateverYourNewDomainIs.com/wp-admin “ hit enter and then fill in your admin username and password.

The second way to log in to your blog is through Bluehost account, as seen below:

Second method: :Log in to WOrdpress button on the top right corner

1: Click on the My Sites tab from the side navigation menu to the left.

2: Hover over the site you wish to manage, and click Manage Site.

3: On the upper right-most corner, click Log into WordPress.

4: Fill in your login details

Step 10: Choose a theme for your blog

When you first log in, you’ll notice that your website may look a bit boring. To spice things up, you need to select a theme. A WordPress theme is your blog’s face. It controls the look, feel, design, and all other front-end elements of your website.

There are several ways to do this, but one of the most common ways is to select a free theme from WordPress. If you are interested in something fancier, you can buy an affordable WordPress template in the Marketplace tab in your Bluehost control panel.

It can be a lot of work to select a theme, so we’ve put together this guide to choosing a suitable theme. Whatever themes you want to use, you should follow a few principles:

1: Select one that has easy-to-read fonts (Arial, Courier, and Verdana are always safe choices).

2: Make sure it is mobile responsive.

3: Choose a theme that is customizable so that you can inject your own personality.

4: Choose a fast and lightweight theme so your blog loads fast.

5: Only purchase a theme that provides proficient customer support and regular updates

6: Choose a theme that supports popular plugins. Plugins are an important part of your websites, so it only makes sense that your chosen theme should be compatible with your plugin.

CONGRATULATION, YOU HAVE SET UP YOUR FIRST BLOG.
